Fertility Monitors

Some fertility monitors determine fertility based upon the measurable hormonal changes a woman’s body experiences around the time ovulation.

These hormonal changes can be measured in one of the following two ways, or you can use a combination of both. Tests can be purchased individually or in a kit form.

Saliva Fertility Tests

Saliva takes on a distinctive fernlike pattern just before ovulation due to an estrogen surge. There are two types of tests to determine fertility through saliva:

A saliva fertility microscope kit allows you to view your saliva with the aid of a low power microscope.

A saliva fertility monitor uses digital technology to read your saliva samples for you.

Urine Fertility Tests

Urine fertility tests allow you to test yourself for the LH surge your body experiences right before you ovulate.

There are two types of urine fertility tests:

• A midstream test is a testing stick held in the urine stream.

• A strip test is a strip placed in a urine collection cup.

Other fertility monitors determine fertility by measuring your basal body temperature. Most women experience an increase in body temperature during ovulation due to the hormone progesterone.

This method requires you to take and chart your temperature each morning to watch for the increase that signals ovulation has occurred.
